In 2010 I applied to join something called a Mastermind. I had no idea what it really was or, what I was getting myself into. This decision completely changed my business growth and my thinking. This group was one of the first of its kind in the UK and has been the most successful over the last seven years.
Since then I’ve never NOT been part of a Mastermind Group. in 2013 I launched my own Mastermind and in 2015 was invited back to help mentor the Mastermind I had originally applied to be part of in 2010. This is something I still do, alongside running my own.
What is a Mastermind?
I think of it as a collaboration of business owners, working together to meet agreed goals. Tennis is a very individual sport, as are many others. It quickly became apparent to me that players in individual sports perform far better when they train as part of a squad. This was true for me as a player, when I was coaching and it also worked when pulling coaches and clubs together to improve the game. Now I see the same results with business owners.
Business is an individual activity. Sure, you can have staff but who can you really talk to in a safe environment. An environment where you’ll work on your business, with support, encouragement. Spending time with your peers will push you, bring out your competitive side and spur you, and your business to heights you can’t reach on your own.
Napoleon Hill stated in his pivotal book, Think and Grow Rich:
“The Mastermind may be defined as the coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony between two or more people for the attainment of a definite purpose”
In other words; get the right people in a room together working towards common goals and powerful stuff starts to happen. These groups give you the opportunity to share successes and importantly, work through specific challenges in your business. This is done with the help of the other members of the group who are invested in your success. It’s like having a board meeting for your business, with people who want you to succeed.
The benefits are numerous. Strategic level thinking, massive accountability, the opportunity to leverage the knowledge of other ambitious business owners. The combined experience in the room can be a catalyst for great ideas. Imagine having dozens, if not hundreds of hours of business experience to call upon on a regular basis.
There’s no doubt the a Mastermind Environment, with the right people, can change businesses and change lives.
