‘Not All Is What It Seems’ — Why Your Own Internal Value Perception Could Be Letting You Down

Have you ever thought about how you perceive your own value?

Value is an important concept in business.

When you run your own business, you need to be aware of the value you’re offering others.

However, if you don’t truly value yourselves and what you offer, too, you can fail.

Offering others value starts with the value you perceive yourself to have.

It’s where some business owners go wrong.

They don’t value themselves enough — and they need to if they want to make it in business.

What’s stopping them?

Worries about what others think

That’s the bottom line.

Society today places a lot of value on the superficial.

People judge others by their appearance; by their jobs; by their financial worth; by their connections; and by their achievements.

We worry about these judgments and whether we’re aspiring to society’s ideals.

We shouldn’t though, because do you know something?

People aren’t really judging us as much as we think they are.

They’re too busy getting on with their own lives.

Trying to achieve their own aims.

Looking at ways to improve their own status or live more comfortably.

Gunning for that promotion.

Focusing on that career move.

They’re occupied with a myriad of things — and thoughts of us aren’t one of them.

We just somehow get it into our heads that they are.

It’s time to stop worrying about what others think

We’ve got to balance our perception of ourselves and of what others think of us.

If we start to focus too much on the latter, we start to lose ourselves.

That’s not something you can do in business.

If you do, you start to lose your vision.

You’ve got to remain true to your principles, to your values.

These are the facets that drive your business forward and help you to stay successful.

You can’t worry about others’ thoughts and opinions of you all the time.

Otherwise, you’ll never move forward.

None of this means you shouldn’t listen to your customers when they have something to say — customer feedback is hugely valuable.

You’ve still got to be aware of how people perceive your business. Not being so can prove fatal for your business.

You’ve just not got to become preoccupied all the time with what everyone else is thinking.

… and time to start valuing yourself

The way to stop worry about others’ opinions is to start valuing yourself and your business.

Once you do that, you can get the best out of life and your business.

Here’s how you can start:

Take better care of yourself

I certainly don’t believe in spending hours and hours in the office, day and night, every day, weekends included.

To me, that’s not working hard: it’s just being a slave to your business.

You’ve got to look after yourself and run your business in a way that allows you to do so.

Make yourself a priority.

Take some time to exercise.

Cut out any rubbish you’re eating.

Do some learning.

Relax.

Stop making excuses and start treating yourself right.

Value your time

Your time is valuable.

If something doesn’t make you leap out of your chair and want to do it, say ‘No.’

You’re the owner — of your business and of your life, and you need to be able to say ‘No’ sometimes.

It might feel unpleasant and uncomfortable, but you must to live the life you want to lead and operate the business you want to run.

Review your prices

Time is your greatest asset.

You’re using that time to secure results for people, so they must pay you well for it.

Decide what you’re worth.

Ask yourself if you’re charging enough.

Think about your costs and factor them into your pricing.

Don’t worry about what others might think of the prices. They can pay them. They can walk away. That’s their choice.

Consider all the happy customers you have and remember the value you offer.

Your prices should reflect the value you believe you offer.

When you charge too little, you’re suggesting to others that you don’t value yourself or your business.

You deserve better than that.

Some final thoughts

You’ve got to run your business your way, not the way you think society believes you should run it.

This means valuing yourself.

Remember your business values and purpose, and let them guide you to run it the ‘right’ way.

Don’t let others’ perceptions drown out your vision.

You work hard for your business and can be proud of it.

Just know that you’re enough.
