For me, there’s no such thing.
We might see and hear stories of online entrepreneurs who have built mind-blowingly successful businesses in very short spaces of time, but I’m not a fan of this kind of approach.
How fantastic it would be to start a business one day and wake up with a bulging bottom line the very next, but the truth is, building a business takes hard work.
You know, elbow grease, and these ‘overnight success’ type of stories, far from inspire budding entrepreneurs, could well dishearten them and even mislead them.
So, let me tell you that if you’re not making rapid progress just now, it’s absolutely no reason to throw the towel in.
Many successful entrepreneurs will tell you the same.
Slow progress is still progress.
What is true is that someone might seem like an overnight success.
One day, you’ve never heard of them; the next, they’re running the hottest new enterprise on the block. Everywhere you turn, they’re there.
The thing you don’t see is all the graft they’ve put in behind the scenes.
They’ve been toiling for years, maybe even decades.
Just chipping away and moving steadily further towards their goals.
They’ve been studying and learning new things.
They’ve been trying different things — and likely been failing, dusting themselves off and getting back on the horse.
Even the failures are progress to them because they’ve discovered something doesn’t work or bring them the results they were expecting (and they know not to use it again).
Then suddenly, they make that breakthrough that catapults them into the big leagues.
Their success is not an accident and it didn’t happen overnight.
You learn as you go along
Building a business is a journey and a learning curve.
You pursue your goals and make decisions as you go along, decisions which will carry you closer towards your goals.
It’s about how you plan and manoeuvre.
Making slow progress gives you the time to make the right decisions, rather than making the wrong ones and hurtling towards the finish line.
You never truly fail
Progress is progress, no matter how slow, so one thing you must never think is that you’ve failed.
Failure is saying, ‘No more of this. I give up’, and going off and doing something else.
Remember that some goals are harder to hit than others and the progress you’re making won’t reveal itself immediately.
You might need even to develop a key competence to achieve it.
That could take time, but when you start building that skill, you’re putting yourself on the way to reaching that goal.
It’s a question of being consistent, of performing the same small tasks each day that will lead you to your goals.
Every time you perform those tasks, you’re moving closer towards those goals. You just don’t realise it.
Slow progress is about focus, grit and resilience
Don’t compare yourself to others; to what they’re doing and how far ahead they’re getting.
Just focus on your own game plan, on your own progress.
I know you have lots of hopes and dreams for your business, and it’s natural to feel a little disappointed when you don’t advance as quickly as you wanted to, but just keep going.
It’s all part of the game.
Slow progress builds your mental reserve and teaches you to persevere, to hang on in there when the going gets tough (and no matter how tough).
You’ve got to push past the disappointment, rather than let it get the better of you, and focus on the positives of the situation.
This creates a winning mindset.
So, be patient and just keep moving forward.
The success in accomplishing your aims will taste even sweeter, even more satisfying, for it.
Reaching for the finish line
No one builds a business overnight.
So, put all those overnight success stories out of your head or, at least, take them with a pinch of salt.
Focus on your goals and work hard.
Review your progress regularly to see how close you are to achieving your goals.
Don’t lose heart if you find there’s still some way to go.
As long as you’re making some progress, then things are going great.
Slow progress is still progress.
And slow and steady wins the race.
You’re going to make it.
