The Power of Community

Starting out on your own is brave.

You just never know what lies ahead.

This journey is one of the things — if not, the thing — that makes self-employment so damned exciting.

What’s important to realise, however, is that you don’t have to do it all on your own.

There’s only so much you can do by yourself.

This is where being part of a community can come into its own.

There’s strength in community — and it can work wonderfully well for your business.

Here’s why:

You no longer struggle alone

You might be operating on your own, but, as harsh as this may sound, you’re not the only one.

There are lots of people like you, running their own businesses and making things happen for themselves.

And that’s a good thing!

They’re going through the same struggles, the same toils, the same highs and the same lows.

They can support you.

They might have expertise in areas you don’t.

That’s handy since there’s no one around in your business to tell you if you’re going wrong.

The community could show you the error of any ways and set you back on the right track.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone who’s got your back?

Everyone wants to grow

A common purpose brings everyone together in a community: you all want to succeed.

You all want to grow.

Being part of a community will place you amongst like-minded people who can help you achieve your aims.

Not only that, the community can introduce you to people who have different perspectives. You don’t necessarily have to be in the same niche to pick up useful tips.

Applying an approach from a different industry could be that little something outside of the box, that little bit more left-field, that really boosts your business.

You can share your passion

Being part of a community gives you the opportunity to tell others about what you do; more importantly, you get to share how much you love what you do.

When you’re talking, people can feel how passionate you are. They get excited about your business and tell others.

Note the difference between talking about your business fondly and ramming a sales pitch down someone’s throat.

You’ve got to know when to draw the line. Be passionate, yes; imposing, no.

You can meet people like you

You can connect with people who are just like you.

Some of these people will be further ahead of you in their business journey.

And you know something — that’s okay. They can help you. They can warn you of some of the mistakes they made and share some of the tips that made them successful.

Conversely, you might meet someone who’s just starting out in their journey. Don’t assume that because you’re further ahead in yours they can’t help you. The things you can learn from a rookie will surprise you.

Power to compete with larger businesses

Big businesses have a lot of resources, which can be disheartening for smaller businesses, who think ‘I’ve got no chance against them.

What big businesses sometimes lack, however, is the power of smaller businesses to really reach out to local communities and connect on a local level.

You’re surrounding yourself with people who have the same ambitions, the same drive to succeed. Together, you’ll all move forward.

It’s a two-way street

Being part of a community isn’t just about you getting everything you can out of it.

As a business, you bring something to the community as well.

You empower the community.

You create jobs. You provide people with opportunities.

You generate revenue which goes back into the local community — unlike large corporations, who don’t always re-invest the money in the local community, but return it to shareholders or invest in operations in other regions.

You trigger innovation, by creating healthy competition with other businesses in the same niche. They start to up their game. The wave of innovation can transform towns and cities.

Stronger together

If there’s one thing I want you to take away from this, it’s for you to appreciate the power of community.

Everyone needs a little help sometimes.

It’s not you against the world.

Communities can help you and you can help them.

It’s mutually beneficial and together we’re stronger.

Everyone wins.
